Memory- A Modern Dance Performance

An Example of Modern Dance
Last Sunday, me, Lao gong, Vinita and Audrey went to watch a modern dance performance called 'Memory'.

It was produced by Frontier Danceland, the dance group I used to be in, and choreographed by my dance teacher Low Mei Yoke and Albert Tiong from Hongkong.

I always loved lao shi's dances, cos it's always so expressive, exhilarating, exciting and conveys messages across to the audience. However, it was a new experience for Audrey andVinita so they had a bit of trouble interpreting a few parts of the dance.

e.g. a lady sitting on a chair tying a maroon piece of cloth diagonally across the chest
Hui Ling>> An imagery of how women used to carry their babies in the past, across their chest. Aud & Vin had no idea what she was doing.

-dance movements along the wall, with head rolling actions across the wall
Hui Ling>> going back to their memories
Audrey>> I thought they represented ghosts. (But the title of the performance is Memory, not Ghost) But Audrey's interpretation is still valid I feel. Memories are sometimes like ghosts. And the beauty of modern dance is that there are really different ways the audience can interpret the movements.

-dancers sitting in a circle with index fingers on the floor, moving in synchronised movements across the floor
Hui Ling>>playing with Ouija board when they were young to look into the future
Vinita: Oh I was wondering what were they pointing at.

It was one week ago that we watched the perfomance so I may have gotten some of their individual interpretations mixed up. Aud and Vin, pls correct me if I remembered wrongly =P

Well, those were imageries to convey certain message with dance interwined in the whole performance. I felt that overall the production was a good one with different genres of music , some parts being silent, some parts with only the dancers' voices singing, some with strong drum music etc. Some parts were abit slow but probably if it wasn't, the full expression would not be brought out.

After the performance, we had a great time sharing all these different interpretations. With such high spirits, we couldn't bear to go home so we went Hongkong Cafe and took some arty farty shots ourselves.

Look at the bird above the lamp!
Ok that was lame...

We are One!!!

Best Shot of the EveningYou know why this is best shot? Cos it's the most arty farty. This is a-east-meet- west dish, spaghetti with chinese stir fried black pepper beef. So Aud used a western cutlery- the fork to take her chinese beef, while vin used a chinese cutlery-the chopsticks to take her spaghetti. This brings out the east-meet-west theme of the dish!!! Tadah!!!
